Grocery Outlet Opens in Norco
Grocery Outlet, a rapidly growing chain of markets featuring extreme-discount prices in fun, colorful environments, opened for business in Norco on May 14, 2020. It is located at 1428 Sixth Street at Norco Gateway, the new Western-themed shopping center at the southeast corner of Sixth Street and Sierra Avenue. The center, developed by Waypoint Development Group, is the first major project on Sixth Street in a decade, and the City has insisted on architecture and public art that complement the existing theme of Sixth Street. Grocery Outlet will be joined by Taco Bell and additional shopping and dining activity.
Grocery Outlet, a publicly-traded company, currently has more than 300 stores in six states and generates in excess of $2 billion in gross annual sales. Grocery Outlet’s unique business model—the chain acquires overstocks and closeouts of major national branded items—results in unprecedented discounts (typically 40-70% off) that tend to make it a popular shopping destination wherever it opens.
All Grocery Outlet stores are independently operated by local couples—in this case, Karren and John Atalig—and the chain has a tradition of community involvement. “We’re really excited to be opening in Norco and look forward to giving back to the community,” states John Atalig, who reports that nearly half of the store’s approximately 30 employees are Norco residents.
Addressing the timing of the market’s opening, the couple notes, “As excited as we are for this day, we’d like to remind shoppers to keep their health at top of mind by following social distancing guidelines while shopping.” Given the current circumstances, Grocery Outlet has deferred any grand opening ceremonies until after the COVID-19 crises has passed.
