It’s Almost Post Time at The Derby Room
The Norco community has waited years for the opening of a restaurant with off-track wagering on thoroughbred horseracing. First, residents were teased by London-based Sportech, which promised a restaurant/wagering facility called Striders at the corner of Fourth Street and Hamner Avenue. After that venture failed, another group of entrepreneurs moved ahead with a comparable venue at Town & Country Center, in the space formerly occupied by Cowboy Joe’s Sports Saloon.
California Horse Racing and Sports, LLC operates similar facilities in Lake Elsinore and the City of Commerce. In Norco, the company has been busy transforming the 5,500-square-foot space into a handsome sports-themed dining/entertainment space with horse racing murals and cushy seating. Guests can cheer on their trifecta selections from a white granite-clad bar, enjoy dinner at a comfortable booth or relax on the patio. Nearly 50 flat-screen TVs not only capture thoroughbred racing from storied tracks like Churchill Downs, Santa Anita or Del Mar, but also anything else happening in the world of sports, from the NBA action in New York to football in Philadelphia to soccer in São Paulo or Barcelona.
The owners are also positioning themselves for the future, when wagering on college and major league sports could potentially be legal. Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a longstanding prohibition on sports wagering and some states have already moved to officially legalize it. In California, that would require a more complicated constitutional amendment, but these businessmen are hedging their bets.
In addition to all taxable food and beverage sales, one-third of every penny wagered will be collected by the City, so The Derby Room represents a revenue-generating business on two fronts. The establishment will offer a full menu at breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week, and the owners are committed to becoming a go-to spot for local residents. The Derby Room is expected to be open no later than mid-December.
